Presentation Title
Smart Manufacturing: Will Everything be Replaced by AI? – A Critical Reflection from the Point of View of Wafer Fab Scheduling
In the “Autonomous Factory of the Future” as propagated by SEMI, AI techniques are a distinguishing enabling element. The rise of AI, however, has also created a lot of hype in the Semiconductor Manufacturing industry, sometimes suggesting that AI would eventually be able to replace established techniques also for planning and operations management and basically do everything. But the question arises whether this is really the case, and whether this expectation should not rather be taken with a pinch of salt.
The question for what kind of tasks AI techniques can actually add value to Semiconductor Manufacturing on top of what is possible with established methods will be elaborated specifically for wafer fab scheduling and dispatching. This will include an explanation of the limitations of novel Reinforcement Learning based dispatching approaches, why established optimisation techniques are still required, and where AI techniques can actually add value, not for dispatching but rather for scheduling.
